Acronym: NHSOS
Project Title: Emblematic Action of Green Islands in the framework of the circular economy (NHSOS)
Duration: 28 months (15/05/2023– 14/09/2025)
Description: NHSOS project will develop the know-how, infrastructure, methodology and policies in order to transform the Greek islands into "Green" ones, through sustainable development, implementation of RES and zero carbon footprint. It is critical to develop integrated actions, which will highlight all the simultaneously developing technological solutions, in an understandable and fully accepted way by the inhabitants of the islands of Chalki, Antikythera and Kastellorizo, as well as the inhabitants of other islands who aspire to follow the steps that have been taken in the model islands of green development. Additionally, it is considered important to develop actions that will enable local communities to utilize their green and sustainable characteristics and to stimulate the tourist activity. Last but nor least, the operation of many and distinct technologies highlights the need for the development of holistic systems for automatically receiving measurements and data, monitoring the performance, as well as the maintenance needs of the technologies that will be implemented on the NHSOS project.
Objectives: The aim of NHSOS project is to maximize the social, environmental and economic benefit resulting from the development of green and sustainable development infrastructure on the Greek islands. Green and sustainable development actions, which have been designed and implemented in some Greek islands, include a number of different approaches and technologies related to decarbonization and energy autonomy, as well as water, wastewater and waste management projects. The benefits that the societies of the Greek islands will derive from their path to a sustainable development model are expected to lead to a more holistic approach to green development.
HIT key role and responsibilities: HIT/CERTH is the Coordinator of NISOS project, as well as the coordinator of Work Packages 4, 5 and 7. WP4 aims at Sustainable waste management, atmospheric and marine pollution monitoring and carbon footprint calculation. WP5 aims at Sustainable Mobility in Green Islands, while WP7 aims at Developing an integrated software platform for aggregating and analyzing big data of energy, mobility, water, environmental and other related data for green islands.
