Acronym: RU READY

Project Title: Reduce, reUse, and RecyclE Actions for cross borDer interplaΥ

Duration: 24 months (27/08/2025 – 27/08/2026)

Description: The RU READY project – Reduce, reUse, and RecyclE Actions for cross borDer interplay – aims to support the transition towards a circular economy in the cross-border (CBC) area between Greece and North Macedonia, where recycling and waste reuse rates remain far below the EU targets. The project responds to the urgent need for improved waste management, stronger citizen involvement, and the adoption of the 3Rs principles: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. It addresses disparities in how waste is handled between the two countries and introduces innovative, localized solutions tailored to both urban and rural contexts.

In Greece, RU READY will implement a smart “Earn As You Throw” (EAYT) system in the Municipality of Velvendos, using smart bins to encourage citizens to reduce waste and recycle more by linking disposal behavior to rewards through the development of a mobile application.

In North Macedonia, it will establish the country's first national-level Reuse Center in an existing building in the Municipality of Bitola, offering a place where materials and items can be reused either directly or through repair and refurbishment.

By promoting waste reduction, resource efficiency, and active citizen participation, RU READY will significantly decrease the volume of waste sent to disposal, create green job opportunities, and support local economies. Overall, the project demonstrates how coordinated cross-border action can drive environmental, economic, and social benefits through circular economy practices.

Role of CERTH/HIT: CERTH/HIT participates in the project as a partner and is responsible for the following:

  • Design, implementation, operation and evaluation of the smart bin system.
  • Design, implementation, operation, and evaluation of the mobile application that will connect the system with the user.
  • Participation in citizen education activities regarding the proper use of the system.
  • Dissemination of the project results.
