Project Title: Development and operation of technological applications for the promotion of bike tourism in RCM – GoBike
Duration: 18 months (01/06/2022 – 30/11/2023)
Description:In Greece, during the last years, there has been an intense debate on the importance of developing alternative forms of tourism (e.g. sport, culture, gastronomy) in order to diversify the existing model of mass tourism. Nevertheless, organized actions for the development of new forms of tourism are still limited. Sports tourism is particularly popular at national and international level, as the new generation of tourists is opting for more 'active vacations involving sports activities'. The fastest growing form of sports tourism is cycling tourism.
Considering the above, the project "Development and operation of technological applications for the promotion of cycling tourism in Region of Central Macedonia - GoBike" proposes the development and operation of a technological system of a web platform and an application (app) for smart devices that will provide information services on cycling paths in the region of Olympus and the peripheral Seih Sou forest in Thessaloniki, evaluated according to the level of difficulty and accompanied by information related to areas of tourist interest. For the Region of Central Macedonia, the development and promotion of this form of tourism is a particular challenge as it offers the opportunity to claim a significant share of the new market and to achieve an extension of the tourist season while at the same time smoothing out the seasonality that has resulted from the adoption of the 'sun and sea' pattern. Its attractive natural environment and untapped areas of outstanding natural beauty are important "weapons" for strengthening its tourist identity and making it an attractive tourist destination 365 days a year. The implementation thus of the project is expected to bring positive results to the wider area of the region as it will contribute to the promotion of sustainable forms of tourism that do not harm the environment, to the increase of tourism product revenues, to the stimulation of employment, to the attraction of new categories of tourists and to the strengthening of its tourist identity.
